1st picnic of the season…in MARCH!

The “winter” we have had this year has been one for the record books…literally.  Essentially no snow and balmy temps.  It makes you wonder what we have in store for us this summer and in to fall.  But far be it for me to worry about that.  I’m enjoying the warm temps and sending the kids outside as much as I can.  Today, the boys had their first picnic in the backyard.  They were SO excited when I said yes to their proposition.

After eating, Nolan put on his engineer hat and created the balancing act you see below.  Where does he come up with this stuff?  I love to see him use his mind the way he does.

Gobble gobble

Yes, we live inside the city limits.

Yes, there are 5 live turkeys in our yard.

No, we are not hosting a turkey dinner anytime soon.

Wheels on the feet

The boys were invited to their first rollerskating birthday party today.  It took a little time, but they both eventually started to get the feel of rolling instead of walking.  As we were leaving they each asked if we could go back again.

The roller rink brought back so many memories of “skating parties” my Catholic school had at the local roller rink.  Similar carpet, benches, lockers.  It was like walking back in time as you passed through the entrance doors.  It’s fun to think that there are still places like this open for our kids to participate in an increasingly uncommon activity like rollerskating.

Cool whip

Lately, Lincoln has been asking for “cool whip” on his salami sandwiches.  (He means Miracle Whip. :))

Play-doh kind of day

Today we quickly discovered that most of our play-doh lost its “doh.”  It was more like play-crusty-rock.  The kids didn’t seem to mind that I threw out 90% of our stock.  They actually were quite helpful in going through the multiple containers in our stash.  Guess it’s time for a new batch.

Where is the snow?

The boys have been extremely disappointed with the lack of snow this winter.  They have asked if we can go sledding or build a snowman every time we’ve had a measly snowfall.  The snow has been so scarce that Jake has had to make a trail of it across the asphalt on the road so the boys can sled down the front hill and glide over snow on their sleds instead of stopping abruptly and getting road rash on their sweet faces.

1st trip to the deer shack

Jake took the boys up north this weekend.  He is there with his dad, two uncles, cousins, and a couple of other guys.  I’ve missed their calls due to working on few projects around the house with my dad, but did get a couple of cute messages and one text.  Apparently, Nolan is having a great time and the “man weekend” is better than donuts. 🙂

Date night

Nolan is a huge music lover (all kinds.)  He can often be found changing stations or CDs and dancing or singing along to what is playing.  I’m hoping to have him start piano lessons in the next year or so.  Anyway, I digress…  He is also often intrigued by the music that comes out of the organ at mass on Sundays.

The two of us had a mom-son date tonight.  Our church hosted a professional organist who gave a concert on the 5-keyboard organ we have in our sanctuary. We had front row seats and were able to watch the organist’s fingers dance across the keys while his feet maneuvered the pedals with precision.  I loved spending the evening with my big-little guy.  I’m pretty sure he enjoyed the one-on-one time, too.

I am loved

I spent the greater part of the day being reminded that I am loved by the man that I love.  Such a simple gesture that meant so much to me.  I smiled each time, knowing he is aware of the places I frequent during the day.

Anyone who knows me knows that I have an obsession tendency to over-use Post-it notes to remind me of things.  (Case in point, my kitchen window.)  The fact that Jake would use Post-its to say “I love you” ( in spite of his dislike of the medium) shows me just how much he meant each one he placed in my path today.
