Indoor skydiving

As part of his birthday present, Aunt Larissa and Shecklet #2 went indoor skydiving. If anyone ever wants to try something adventurous and fun, there’s a great chance Shecklet #2 will be up for it.

First Communion – Shecklet #4

Today was a day that Shecklet #4 has been counting down to for several weeks! Her godparents came to town to witness her First Communion with us. We were also joined by Grandma Patti, Grandpa Dave, Great Grandma Lois, Aunt Kari, Aunt Larissa, and several friends. Our little girl is definitely loved!

In his homily, Fr. Jim asked the kids if any of them had thought about what they wanted to be when they grew up. (He was relating his question to the call the apostles had once Jesus ascended to Heaven.) Shecklet #4 volunteered her answer last. She said she wants to be a saint! This sweet girl has always had an extra special dose of compassion for others and deep feeling of God’s presence in her life. I look forward to continuing to watch her grow in her faith.

One of my friends was able to capture some beautiful pictures of Shecklet #4 receiving the Eucharist. And Jake recorded a video. After mass, we had an opportunity to take a photo with our pastor, Fr. Jim.

We continued our celebration with a reception at our house. Huge thanks to M&M for helping set out/prep the food for everyone after mass. And special thanks to Shecklet #1 for sharing his ice cream cake for dessert – it was a popular choice with our friends and family!

Congratulations, Shecklet #4! We are so happy for you! What a beautiful day!

Healed!

Great news from the orthopedic doctor this afternoon! Shecklet #3’s shoulder has healed and can resume her normal activities (and activity level.) She is really happy to be able to bike and play frisbee again with her siblings.

Marker in place

I ended up at the cemetery last Monday (3/29) while taking a walk with my friend’s littlest kiddo (so she could get some things done in her house.) We stopped to see Astrid’s grave and found that her marker had been placed. The warmer temps and melted snow must have made it possible for them to finally set it.

A wave of emotions hit me the moment I saw her name etched in granite. I was thankful that my companion was an almost one-year-old who didn’t question my tears or feel the need to comfort me. I was able to cry and feel the weight of the finality that was in front of me, alone. Astrid’s body’s final resting place is now marked for anyone who visits that part of the cemetery to see. Her earthly existence, though only physically felt by me and my family, is known. It’s a reality that is both comforting and hard at the same time.

ETA: On 4/7, my friend, Michelle, stopped at the cemetery with two of her boys to see Astrid’s marker and pray for our family. When I was talking to her later about the flowers beside the marker, she said someone else had left them prior to their visit. My grieving mama’s heart found comfort in knowing someone cared enough to notice my little girl and leave flowers. A simple gesture that means a lot.

And the orthopedic doctor says…

Humerus should be fully healed in 6-8 weeks. Shecklet #3 can remove the sling and move the arm as tolerated. Wrapping it with the ace bandage we received is optional, but she’s found it does provide some stability while she sleeps, so we’ll continue to wrap her up each night until she’s feeling more confident without it. Next check is in four weeks when they’ll do another round of x-rays to see how the bone is healing. (Unicorn headband is compliments of friends of ours who came over on Saturday to cheer her up.)

Break #2 in seven months

We had a solid run of 13 years without a broken bone that ended last fall. We now have our second break in 7 months.

This brave girl took a hard fall on Friday night while riding on some pretty tricky snow. Ski patrol brought her down the run and evaluated her before we took her home. Ortho urgent care diagnosed a broken humerus. ☚ī¸ Follow up with the doctor is next week. We are praying she heals quickly and completely and that her pain decreases over the next couple of days.

First scooter ride of 2021 🛴

This trio isn’t ready to give up their winter sports quite yet, but with the temp hitting 50 today, they were ok busting out their scooters to enjoy a ride around the block and do tricks in the driveway.

Rite of passage

Shecklet #3 has wanted to get her ears pierced for a while, but the timing has always been off. First it was basketball season and then lake season. Pandemic season seemed like the perfect time to finally schedule an appointment for her to have it done.

I originally thought I’d take her to a tattoo/piercing parlor, but the location we checked out a year and a half ago isn’t doing piercings right now. Enter kid-friendly option Rowan Piercing, located in select Target stores. Trained nurses use numbing cream and kindness to put the kids at ease. It was a great experience and Shecklet #3 is thrilled with the results!

During and after piercing:

After:

Without a mask. Now her job for the next six weeks is to clean and twist the earrings 2-3 times a day. Knowing her, she will take this responsibility seriously.
