Birthday Party #1 for #4

Little #4 had no problem with her birthday cake. In fact, looking at photos from her siblings’ first birthdays, she was clearly the cleanest after she was done.  The boys were probably at a disadvantage since their frosting was chocolate… 1st birthdays

She took handfuls of cake with such skill and intention, she has clearly been watching her older siblings over the last 12 months.  We had a ton of fun with family and friends who were able to join us for cupcakes and ice cream.

1st bday party 2014

Happy 1st birthday, sweetheart!  We love you!

I am going to see the second movie in the Hunger Games series with one of my besties tonight. Can’t wait! (Our husbands then get a night out to go see the second Hobbit movie.)

The accessories above were all created by Little #3. No prompting on my part. Looks like I have a mini Katniss Everdreen. Little #3 loves to make bows and arrows out of these balls and sticks we gave the boys for Christmas two years ago. In fact, she already has a pink bow picked out for when she is considered “old enough.”

Halloween 2013

The 3 older Littles love playing with the dress up clothes/costumes in our basement.  It’s not surprising then, that the idea of collecting candy just for dressing up is sheer brilliance in their minds.  I’m pretty sure that the level of excitement doesn’t stem from the possibility of eating everything they bring home. They purely enjoy dressing up, greeting the neighbors, collecting, combining, and then sorting what they were so generously given.

This year, our Littles went as a mummy, baby dragon, cowgirl and a gnome.  It was so much fun seeing Little #2 wear the mummy costume that Uncle Tony wore as a kid.  Little #4, the dragon, was the third Shecklet to don the warm, fuzzy, green outfit. (Little #3 was too little her first Halloween and too big her second.)  We put a pink bow on her head to make her a “girl dragon.”  Our cowgirl was a superhero with her pink mask, and our garden gnome was grinning from ear to ear, but you couldn’t quite see it through his long, white beard.

Trick-or-treating began after school when we stopped by “the loft” to visit Papa, Mr. Eric and Uncle Tony.  Auntie Kristin also came by and brought the kids a treat.  From there, we went to Nana & Papa’s house to run up the front sidewalk and ring the doorbell.  After a few group photos and adding non-edible treats to their buckets/bags, we loaded back up and drove home to get ready for round three in our neighborhood.

Two of our friends joined us for the fun.  The guys walked the kids door-to-door and the ladies took turns holding Little #4.  Little #3 joined us back home after making it around most of our block.  From what I was told, the boys made mad dashes between houses as they went around the rest of the neighborhood.  It was cool and slightly misty out tonight, so I’m sure running helped keep them at least a little warm.

Upon their return, Little #1 & Little #2 dumped their candy into one pile.  Little #3 didn’t want to be left out, so she added hers to the mix.  Then, being the organizers that they are, they set to work on sorting the candy by type.  Who knew that Halloween could double as math exercise?

Halloween 2013

We ended our nightly prayers by praying for the people who handed out candy tonight.  It was a great way to talk to the Littles about what generosity means and how we can in turn be generous to others – and not just when it comes to candy.  I love to see their little hearts so open to such a concept.

Such a fun day!  Little #3 thoroughly enjoyed turning 3.  I love that our friends and family came to help make her birthday extra special.

Last Park Day of July 2013

This week’s “Tour of Parks” stop took us to the local nature center.  Little #1 visited here for a school field trip last year and saw how they make maple syrup.

Here are the three older ones by the frog statue made from trash pulled from the Mississippi River.

They had lots of fun playing in the sand and water.

There was also a huge garden where the kids were encouraged to water the flowers, vegetables and herbs.

The kids asked when we can go back again, so we will definitely be adding today’s stop to our “must return” list.

Life changes

I have been meaning to write about a few things that have taken place over the last 8 months in hopes that someday I’ll be able to look back on this season in life and laugh a little while smiling and thanking God that everything turned out just fine in the end.  God is faithful and I’m finally ready to publish what I began writing back in November of 2012.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I never would have dreamed that when we accepted an offer on our house at the end of August that we were setting the craziest time of our lives into motion.  I’m sure anyone who has had kids start a new school, sold their house, moved, rented, OR had a baby would tell you that it can be a bit stressful.  Did you notice I said “or?”  Can you imagine doing all of those things at once?  In our case, that “or” should read “and.”  I still can’t believe that’s the path we embarked on back in August.  (Well, technically I found out I was pregnant in June, but anyway…)
We should have been excited that we actually got an offer on our house relatively quickly, right?  Well, we were, but the catch was we had a month to move out.  At least that’s what it said on paper.  In reality, we had much less than that.  First, we had to wait for the inspection to go through.  (No sense packing anything until that passed, right?)  Then we had to wait for the appraisal to be completed and returned.  (Again, it didn’t make sense to pack much before that was approved because if the house didn’t appraise for enough, the whole offer would fall apart.  And our agent wasn’t 100% confident our house would appraise high enough.  So why bother packing if you’d just have to unpack?)  So we waited, and waited, losing precious packing time with every day that passed.  Finally, on September 20th, we got a call saying that the numbers looked good and we would be closing in a week.  That’s right, a week!  We knew this was the date all along, but we really weren’t sure everything would fall into place.  I quickly started making phone calls to line up a storage container for all of our stuff and sent out a plea to family and friends to help us pack up our entire house.  Oh, and we also needed to find a temporary place to live.  Minor detail, right?
Saturday morning, we had a crew of awesome help show up and start loading & packing, packing & loading.  By late afternoon, “The Big Blue Box” we had rented was full as was my parents’ trailer.  My kitchen cupboards were bare, rooms were empty, and it looked like we were actually going to have a chance at getting everything out of the house by  the closing on the 28th.  I am still in awe of all that was accomplished in one day.  I don’t think we could have asked for a better group of people to help us in such a short amount of time.
The rest of the week we continued to pack smaller items, leaving the beds until the very end.  We moved them to the rental house I found on Craigslist on Thursday.  (More on that house later.)  We had a series of “lasts” in the house that we tried to capture in photos – last dinner, bath time, bed time, etc.  Even as we went to bed that last night in the house, I think I was still a little in disbelief that we were not going to be living in that house anymore.  With all of our belongings gone, it didn’t really feel like our home anymore, but the reality of us actually moving somewhere else hadn’t officially hit me quite yet.  That was still to come.
The move to the rental house went smoothly.  Again, with some great helping hands, the blue box was emptied into the garage and house very quickly.  I should take a step back though.  The rental itself was not in very good condition when we were ready to move in on Thursday.  Having previously been rented for 8 years, the landlord was attempting to get it in to a rentable state again, however, we found out too late that he came up extremely short of that goal.  The place was downright disgusting.  Friends and family spent hours just getting the place livable.  And when I say livable, I just mean clean.  Who in their right mind rents a place in the state this house was in?  I guess we did.  Like I said, we were short on time and jumped at the first place with enough space to store our belongings while we looked for a new home.
Cleaning the house was one ordeal.  Finding all of the broken or non-functioning things while living in the house was another.  Here’s what we encountered in our little rental house in 7 months: The kitchen sink leaked (but did get fixed.) The dishwasher didn’t work. (Once replaced, the water leading to it leaked into the basement for a week, causing damage to the ceiling and wall – water also leaked behind the electrical panel.)  Apparently a constant leak into the basement wasn’t a huge concern for our landlord.  The fridge constantly ran and had broken shelves, the bathtub jets leaked into the basement bathroom, toilets didn’t flush without holding down the levers, and the washing machine didn’t work.  We were without a washer for TWO WEEKS until we ended up bringing in our own.  What kind of landlord doesn’t return phone calls or texts when a family of five renting a property is without a functioning washer that was promised in the rental listing?  (Thankfully, my mom was kind enough to do many loads for us during those two weeks.)  We negotiated a rent reduction since we brought in our own (functional) machine.  The garage door opened, but the track looked as if it was going to break in half.  Brackets actually broke on the door and had to be fixed.  Then a short time later, the door quit closing on its own when using the remote button.  The sliding back door became more and more difficult to open and close as the temperatures got colder, and the screen door was completely useless.  The oven only heated to one temperature…hot, and to top it all off, the furnace died in February on one of the coldest days of the year…the day Little #4 was born.
Just re-reading that list makes me shake my head in disbelief.
I turned in our keys to the place we called “the rental house,” today.  I couldn’t bring myself to ever call the place “home” for numerous reasons, but primarily because I needed to hold onto the hope that we would find a real place to call home again.  Thanks to the prayers of so many, we finally can.
State Fair 2012
The boys have been early risers for a while…well, earlier than their mom, that is.  This morning was a bit extreme though.  It’s funny how on the ball they are when they know there is something exciting in store for the day.  We have been “counting sleeps” since last week in anticipation of the MN State Fair.  Well, this morning I was sweetly awoken by my “middle little,” all dressed with his bed made and everything.  He came into our bedroom and said, “today we get to go to the Fair!”  If only it were as easy to get them up on “regular” days of the week.
We met Jake at the fairgrounds after he was finished with work.  We took in the John Deere tractors, little kids farm area where the trio got to “do chores” and then tried out the Giant Slidewith our friend, Michelle and her fiancé, Angelo.  From there, we headed to the space needle for a round-a-bout view of the metro.  Yummy, deep-fried food, sheep, chickens & rabbits and lots of people watching rounded out the evening.  The kids had a great time 🙂
Lincoln’s 4th birthday!
Dear Lincoln,
I am sure we say this every year now, but I cannot believe you are 4 years old!  It seems like such a short time ago that your daddy and I were preparing for your arrival.  Your entrance into this world is one that will always be extra-special because of the fact that you were born on Easter Sunday.  So in a way, your birthday gets remembered twice each year.  Once on your “real” birthday and again on Easter, because it was such a special day for us.
You have grown more this year than ever.  Gone are the toddler features you had when you were three.  You are a full-fledged preschooler!  (Complete with a shorter haircut than you had last year 🙂 )  You love to ask questions and discover the meanings of new words.  Your handwriting is impressive as is your ability to remember what you learn at school.  I am so thankful for the Godly instruction you have twice a week.  You’ve even taught me a few things!
Some of your favorite things include riding your scooter, playing in the pool at the gym, casting with your fishing pole, playing in the sandbox, and constructing forts & buildings with your brother.  You also love your little sister so much!
We celebrated your birthday by taking you to the science museum to see the “real pirates” exhibit.  Your favorite part was the movie in the beginning, but you also liked raising the flag, looking through the periscope, and the treasure chest of pirate booty.  After the museum, we went out for pizza and then went home to get ready for your party.
Family & friends came at 6:30 and the weather was so unseasonably warm that we had everyone gather outside in the driveway.  That was a first!  I’m guessing there won’t be too many years where you’ll be celebrating your birthday outside without a jacket.  You requested a “volcano cake” so I attempted to come through for you.  I made two angel food cakes, placed them on top of each other and dumped two cans of cherries on top of them.  You loved it, which is all that counts!  (It actually got rave reviews from everyone else too, and there was only one piece to spare at the end of the night.
As if cake & ice cream aren’t enough on a 4th birthday, you asked your dad if we could also have s’mores.  So your awesome daddy brought the fire pit up to the front, started the fire, went to get s’mores ingredients and we had round two of sugary treats.  I have to say, you were in rare form when we finally put you to bed.
You are a sweet, smart, spunky boy, Lincoln.  We love you so much!  And we’re looking forward to watching you learn and grow in the coming year.
XOXO
Mommy & Daddy
